Why did you choose the name “Crowned Photography”?

I love it when I get a weird look from someone, who then asks, “You photograph BIRTHS? And you named your business CROWNED Photography??” knowing that a certain image has probably flashed through their mind. Yep. That’s exactly right.

But there’s quite a bit more to it than that.

As a mother who personally had a very difficult pregnancy, struggling through a “mild” (if you could even call it that) case of hyperemesis gravidarum (essentially extreme sickness during pregnancy,) the only things that got me through that horrible time were my faith, my family, ZOFRAN, and the thought of my precious baby finally making her entrance into the world. After laboring through possibly the most difficult, physically painful experience of your life, the best words to hear are “The baby is crowning!!!” The excitement and joy in that moment brings me to tears every time. While I realize that not every birth ends up as a vaginal delivery, the feeling is the same as you are just moments away from seeing your baby’s face for the first time.

But there is another, more important reason behind the name. My name “Laura” actually means “crowned with laurel leaves.” In ancient Greece, victors were crowned with a wreath of laurel leaves, both in athletic competitions & in poetic meets. If you were to ask a mother what her “crowning achievement,” or her most glorious accomplishment is, almost every single one would answer “The birth of my child(ren).” I love that the Grecians awarded these special crowns for victories in both the physical and mental realms. As any mother knows from experience, giving birth tests both of of these capabilities to the limit. And once you have come out victorious on the other side, the feeling of accomplishment is like none other.

This is the heart of Crowned Photography.
